Granville Island

The Public Market, Net Loft, Creekhouse, Maritime Market & Marina, Railspur Artisan Alley, artist studios, Kids Market (ballroom closed) and playgrounds, including the Splash Park are now open daily. Unfortunately, False Creek Community Centre will not open this summer. CMHC-Granville Island has installed portable washrooms to replace those in the community centre.

Granville Island Public Market remains open 9 am - 6 pm daily to support our merchants who wish to be open, and for essential grocery shopping to support Vancouverites in accessing fresh, healthy foods. Parking is temporarily free.

The Public Market merchants ask that you support them and their safety by please shopping alone for groceries to comply with our social distancing needs in the market. The market has stayed open throughout the pandemic for essential grocery shopping, but if you shop in groups, we have to leave people wishing to shop for groceries outside in line.  A new entry and exit protocol has been added on busier days in order to maintain social distancing. Please note: Lee's Donuts and Oyama Sausage have both moved to a lineup outside their doors, the Public Market entrances are separate and more often than not, have no lineup.

Groups and tours are not permitted in the Public Market. Tours are not permitted on the Island this summer due to Covid-19 gathering restrictions.

This is truly an extraordinary time in our global history. Thank you for supporting the small, independent businesses on Granville Island. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back to Granville Island in the near future. Please, stay healthy.

Stanley Park

Stanley Park is a magnificent green oasis in the midst of the urban landscape of Vancouver.

Explore the 400-hectare natural West Coast rainforest and enjoy scenic views of water, mountains, sky, and majestic trees along Stanley Park's famous Seawall. Discover kilometres of trails, beautiful beaches, local wildlife, great eats, natural, cultural and historical landmarks, along with many other adventures. The park offers a wide range of unforgettable experiences for all ages and interests, including Canada’s largest aquarium.

Our parks are open from 6am to 10pm unless otherwise posted, and access to washrooms is available from dusk until dawn.

Capilano Suspension Bridge

The bridge was originally built in 1889 by George Grant Mackay, a Scottish civil engineer and park commissioner for Vancouver. It was originally made of hemp ropes with a deck of cedar planks, and was replaced with a wire cable bridge in 1903. In 1910 Edward Mahon purchased the Capilano Suspension Bridge. "Mac" MacEachran purchased the Bridge from Mahon in 1935 and invited local natives to place their totem poles in the park, adding a native theme. In 1945, he sold the bridge to Henri Aubeneau.

The bridge was completely rebuilt in 1956.

The park was sold to Nancy Stibbard, the current owner, in 1983. Annual attendance increased, and in May 2004, Treetops Adventures was opened, consisting of seven footbridges suspended between old-growth Douglas Fir trees on the west side of the canyon, forming a walkway up to 30 metres (98 ft) above the forest floor

Cleveland Dam
Cleveland Dam
Cleveland Dam

The Cleveland Dam is a 91 m high concrete dam at the head of the Capilano River in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada that holds back Capilano Lake, also known as Capilano reservoir. Part of the Capilano River Regional Park, it is not used for generating hydroelectricity, but rather for storing a portion of the Lower Mainland'sdrinking water. Construction was started in 1951 and completed in 1954.

The dam is named after engineer Ernest Albert Cleveland who envisioned the need for the proper maintenance of a pristine and efficient water supply as well as sustainable use of water resources. He served as the first chief commissioner of the Greater Vancouver Water District from 1926 until his death in 1952.

Humble Beginnings

Hy Aisenstat (pronounced eye–zen–stat) was born in Alberta in 1923, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. Hy’s family was like most new immigrant families: relatively poor, sometimes prosperous, and like most immigrants, Hy worked hard. He was admitted to the University of British Columbia as a pre–law student, but when his father was killed in a level crossing accident, Hy had to return to Calgary to support his family. Hy tried various professions and even owned a small oil company that did relatively well.
